Notes:

In 1878 the Baltimore and Ohio Railway Company determined to run a fleet of transatlantic steamers, but in order to avoid high costs they decided to seek co-operation with men who knew the business. Accordingly they approached two brothers, William & Edmund Johnston, who had considerable experience in the Black Sea trade, and together they started the "Johnston Line", all of whose ships' names ended with "..more". The Inman steamers City of Baltimore and City of Antwerp were purchased and renamed Baltimore and Thanemore.
