[Passenger Ships of the World, Eugene W.Smith]

One interesting story of her time in the RMSPC's fleet was how she lost her captain in 1885. This story is told by the late Captain A.P. Dix, then a junior officer in the Mondego.

"On 21st December I sailed as 4th officer. We cleared the Needles about 5.00pm and set course for Ushant. It was a beautiful, calm, clear night and all went well until 7.00pm when it was my special duty to visit holds and storerooms and then take keys and report all correct to the Commander, which I accordingly set out to do.

"Not finding the skipper in his cabin, I proceeded to the most likely places I should find him, but without luck. At eight bells I informed the Chief Officer and a general search was ordered throughout the ship. At 9.00pm nothing having been found or seen of him, we came to the conclusion that he had either jumped or fallen overboard.

"We proceeded with the Chief Officer in command, who turned the old packet into Plymouth, much to our disgust, as we had all reckoned on promotion, at least for one voyage. We stayed in Plymouth two days, when Capt. Chapman came down from London and took command. Nothing has ever been seen or heard of poor Captain Green."

[Royal Mail, T.A. Bushell]

In 1888 Mondego was sold to A Ross in Glasgow.
