Charles
WALKER, 1870 – 1949
Charles Lindsay was born on the 21st
of September 1870 at Clifton, Bristol, England. His father was Charles Palmer
Walker, a Foreman at the Bristol
Waggon Works. His mother was Sarah Bridges, the daughter of Joshua Bridges
from Worcester.
In the 1871 census he was found at 3
Albert Terrace, St Philip & Jacob, Bristol, with his two elder sisters. By
1981 they were at 163 Stapleton Road with one brother and four more sisters.
Before 1991 Charles had left home and was found as an Engineer living at 38
Bury St, Barrow-in-Furness. This can only have been a temporary move as a
couple of years later he was in Gloucester.
In
the third quarter of 1893 Charles married Annie Sarah J Hamlet, the daughter of
Charles Sargent, a ginger beer maker who had been blind since his childhood.
Her mother was Mary Ann Hamlet. This must have been a hurried marriage as Annie
was at least five months pregnant at the time. They eventually had four
children:
·
Marion
Annie Walker (Musset) – born at 218 Barton St on 20th October
1893
·
Jack Walker – born 2nd
quarter 1898
·
Ruth Walker – born 9th
June 1904, died 1st quarter 1974
·
Sidney Gordon Walker – born 1st
June 1909, died 2nd quarter 1970
Charles worked as a machine fitter in
the Gloucester
Wagon Works.
By 1901 the family were found at 19
Tweenbrook Avenue Gloucester.
By 1911 the family were found at 11
Tweenbrook Avenue Gloucester.
Charles and Annie were found at 11
Tweenbrook Avenue Gloucester in the 1939 census. Annie died in the fourth
quarter of 1944. Charles died in the first quarter of 1949.
