Richard YORKE, 1876 - 1947
Richard Macgregor
York was the sixth son of
James York and
Anne Macgregor. He was born on 22nd
June 1876
at 56
Union Street, Greenock.
His
father was a harbour contractor in Greenock
In 1887, when Richard was only 11, his mother died and at that time the family moved to 7 Park Quadrant, Glasgow.
It is not clear the family changed its name from York to Yorke between 1881 and 1891. There is a story of a York family rift that caused the change.
Around 1900, Richard moved to Kilmory, Arran, as he is described as an "Annuitant" in the 1901 census. He was boarding at "Glensee" with Isabella McKinnon, who was a widow and a farmer.
He died at Kilmory, Arran 2nd May 1947, aged 70.
